  18. When Windows NT is booted, if an American Power Conversions (APC)
  19. Smart UPS is installed, its battery may be discharged or the UPS
  20. function may be shutdown.
  21.  
  22. CAUSE
  23. =====
  24.  
  25. During the boot sequence, Windows NT writes configuration/detection
  26. code to the COM Port to determine baud rate, FIFO information, and for
  27. mouse detection. The string written to the port may contain the letter
  28. "D," which the Smart UPS interprets as a command to discharge the
  29. battery. The string may also contain the letter "S," which will cause
  30. the Smart UPS to shutdown.
  31.  
  32. The Smart UPS interprets the string incorrectly only if it has already
  33. been placed in the "Smart Mode" prior to starting Windows NT. The user
  34. must have already placed the UPS in the Smart Mode using the software
  35. supplied by American Power Conversions; otherwise the Smart UPS will
  36. be unaffected by the signal Windows NT sends to the COM Ports.

  41. The Smart UPS can be used successfully by temporarily disconnecting
  42. the cable from the COM Port during the Windows NT boot sequence. The
  43. user can also reset (power off, then on) the UPS to return to the
  44. default UPS mode. NOTE: This also has the effect of interrupting power
  45. to the computer.

  47. American Power Conversions is currently working on a Windows NT driver
  48. that will take full advantage of the Smart UPS unit's capabilities.

  51. independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
